Anecdote
Once, on the first night of a two week long cycle-tour in northern Spain my friend – ‘Samir’ ;-) – reached into his tent bag and produced with pride his new ultralight one man shelter, only to find out seconds later he had not packed the poles! Sticks and branches don’t work quite as well and taking away an essential need such as sleep takes its toll. Lesson learned; check each item carefully before packing them for the last time – its just too easy to forget one item amongst many.
